The California security guard license, decoded (buyer edition)
Two licenses matter in California security: the company's Private Patrol Operator (PPO) and the individual officer's Guard Card. Here's how to check both in 60 seconds.
The PPO (company license)
Issued by the CA Bureau of Security & Investigative Services under B&P Code §7582. Format: PPO followed by 5–6 digits (e.g., PPO #121830). Any company without a live PPO is operating illegally.
The Guard Card (officer license)
Every uniformed officer must hold an active Guard Card, obtained after 40 hours of BSIS-approved training including Powers to Arrest (PC §837).
The Firearms Permit (armed only)
Armed officers need an additional BSIS Firearms Permit, renewed with live-fire qualification every 6 months.
How to verify in 60 seconds
Go to search.dca.ca.gov, pick 'Private Patrol Operator' or 'Security Guard', enter the number. Status must be 'Clear'.
Consequences of hiring an unlicensed guard
Property owners can be named in premises-liability claims when unlicensed officers use force. Verify before signing.
